RIBLIA Caucus co-chair Mack issues statement on ICE Superior Court incident
|
STATE HOUSE – Sen. Tiara Mack, co-chair of the Rhode Island Black, Latino, Indigenous, Asian American and Pacific Islander (RIBLIA) Caucus, issued the following statement regarding the incident that happened between ICE and a Superior Court intern yesterday:
“Yesterday’s incident at the Superior Court is beyond unacceptable and is a perfect and unfortunate example of the callous, inhumane and irresponsible actions of ICE and the Trump administration.
“This young man was at the Superior Court learning about how our system of government is supposed to be operating and instead, he was threatened with the unlawful force of a federal government that is out of control. As ICE continues its indiscriminate attack on the American people in communities across the country, solely based on the racist and classist assumptions articulated and endorsed by Justice Kavanaugh, Rhode Island leaders must be proactive in protecting our immigrant communities and communities of color who are the most at risk of these unlawful disappearances and kidnappings of civilians.
“The RIBLIA Caucus firmly stands behind the Judiciary’s call to offer virtual hearings so that other individuals who are just trying to do the right thing are not subject to the harassment, threats and intimidation of ICE and their unchecked assault on our families, friends and neighbors. The risk undocumented community members face while attending in-person hearings is immense, and remote access to justice will ensure important hearings are not missed, while ensuring full participation in the judicial system. We are eager to work with the Judiciary to establish a permanent pathway for virtual hearings and remote access to justice,” said Senator Mack (D-Dist. 6, Providence).
