11/10/2025 Chairman Azzinaro honored with Veterans Leadership Award
STATE HOUSE – Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Samuel A. Azzinaro has been recognized with the Veterans Leadership Award by Congressman Seth Magaziner.  Chairman Azzinaro received the award at Congressman Magaziner’s 2nd Annual Veterans Day Breakfast held today in Warwick.

“It is an honor to be recognized for helping our state’s dear veterans and I thank Congressman Magaziner for not only this award, but also, for all that he has done to support our veterans.  But more importantly, I thank our brave and dedicated veterans for their sacrifices, their courage, and their dedication to freedom and democracy.  We as a country owe everything to our veterans, and I thank them for their service,” said Chairman Azzinaro (D-Dist. 37, Westerly).

The special event honored those who have served our country and recognized their invaluable contributions to communities across the state.

Chairman Azzinaro has been a longtime advocate for veterans at the State House.  This legislative session, he sponsored three veteran-related bills that became law.  The first allows Rhode Island Bronze Star Medal recipients to apply for a special license plate without paying a registration fee or service charge.  The second bill provides protection and prevents unethical, improper conduct and the collection of fees by anyone advising or assisting a veteran filing a claim for disability benefits with the Department of Veterans Affairs.  The third bill to become law renamed the Sakonnet River Bridge in honor of Staff Sergeant Christopher Potts. Staff Sergeant Potts, a Tiverton native, was 38 years old when he gave his life in service to his nation in Iraq in 2004.

Commander Bob Flynn, USN, Retired, also received the Veterans Leadership Award.  Operation Stand Down Rhode Island and Meals on Wheels Rhode Island each received the Excellence in Community Service Award.
