Rep. Knight honored by Council of Churches for work to prevent gun violence

STATE HOUSE – Rep. Jason Knight was given a special honor today by the Rhode Island State Council of Churches for his work to reduce gun violence.
Representative Knight (D-Dist. 67, Barrington, Warren) was honored at the council’s Heroes of Faith 2025 breakfast, held this morning at Temple Beth El in Providence. The honor was a special recognition, outside the awards the council presents annually, to recognize Representative Knight’s legislative efforts over many years.
“The Rhode Island State Council of Churches is honoring Representative Jason Knight for his faithful service in advancing the cause of compassion and peace,” said Rhode Island State Council of Churches Executive Minister Jeremy Langill. “Sacred scripture is clear on our responsibility to live into a transformed reality, one where we are called to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. We are grateful for his tireless focus on reducing gun violence and advocating for a safer Rhode Island.”
Representative Knight has sponsored and cosponsored numerous measures for firearms safety, including this year’s law to ban the sale of assault weapons in Rhode Island. He was the sponsor of the law passed in 2021 to ban “straw purchases,” the buying or procuring weapons on behalf of someone who is legally prohibited from possessing them. He cosponsored the law prohibiting high-capacity gun magazines, as well as laws requiring safe storage of firearms, banning bump stocks and modifications to make semi-automatic weapons work like fully automatic weapons, and ensuring gun sales applications are reviewed by the police in the purchaser’s own community.
