New law expands RI virtual gaming to other jurisdictions
|
STATE HOUSE — Legislation introduced by Senate Majority Leader Frank A. Ciccone III and Rep. Scott A. Slater to bring in more revenue to Rhode Island by expanding online virtual gaming to other states and countries has been signed into law.
The legislation was passed by the General Assembly June 20 and signed into law by the governor June 30.
“Rhode Island has already positioned itself as a national leader in online virtual gaming and this bill would further strengthen our state’s role as an industry leader. If passed, this legislation will bring more revenue through job creation and create more opportunities for our state, all at minimal costs to the gaming facilities and the taxpayers since the operations are already up and running in Rhode Island. This bill is as simple as broadcasting our existing online virtual games to other states and countries. It positions our state facilities well to take advantage of future opportunities in this area, to the benefit of Rhode Island taxpayers,” said Leader Ciccone (D-Dist. 7, Providence, Johnston).
The legislation (2025-S 1017A, 2025-H 6388) allows the state’s two gaming facilities to livestream virtual games to external jurisdictions for the purpose of facilitating external game play activities in other states and countries where virtual gaming is permitted.
“This is an easy step to make to help our local industry stay competitive nationally and internationally,” said Representative Slater (D-Dist. 10, Providence). “Most importantly, by allowing online virtual gaming from our casinos to stream to patrons outside of our state, we’re keeping casino jobs right here in Rhode Island.”
