6/13/2025 Senate approves Sen. Patalano’s bill to establish crime of attempted kidnapping of a minor
STATE HOUSE – The Senate has approved legislation from Sen. Todd M. Patalano that would establish the crime of attempted kidnapping of a minor.

“Believe it or not, state law is currently silent on the crime of attempted kidnapping of a minor. This legislation will rectify that oversight and allow us to hold people responsible when they attempt to abduct and prey on children. I am grateful to the Attorney General’s office for its leadership, and to the many others who have supported this important bill,” said Senator Patalano (D-Dist. 26, Cranston).

The legislation (2025-S 0950), submitted on behalf of the Office of the Attorney General, establishes attempted kidnapping of a minor as a felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

The bill, which was approved in the Senate on June 12, now heads to the House of Representatives, where companion legislation (2025-H 5639) sponsored by Deputy Majority Leader Justine Caldwell (D-Dist. 30, East Greenwich) was approved earlier this month. The Senate Committee on Judiciary has recommended passage of Rep. Caldwell’s legislation in concurrence.
