General Assembly OKs Serpa, Burke bill to require Retirement Board to publish recordings of meetings
|
STATE HOUSE — The General Assembly today approved legislation introduced by Rep. Patricia A. Serpa and Sen. John Burke that would require the Retirement Board of the Employees Retirement System to publish recordings of its meetings.
The bill (2025-H 5715A, 2025-S 0514A) would require the board to publish online all archived video or audio recordings and all future recordings of meetings of the board.
“Transparency has long been a priority of the General Assembly,” said Representative Serpa (D-Dist. 27, West Warwick, Coventry), who serves as chairwoman of the House Oversight Committee. “While the meetings have been streamed live, it’s only recently that the Retirement Board has begun posting archival footage of its meetings. With everything that retired state employees have had to endure over the past several years, they deserve for the actions of the board to be not only open, but easily accessible. This will make that openness and accessibility obligatory under state law.”
“For a long time, thousands of state retirees as well as the general public could not access archived meetings except through written minutes,” said Senator Burke. “This is good public policy that encourages openness and transparency, and it should be standard operating procedure for all public bodies that hold open meetings.”
The measure now moves to the governor’s office.
