MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee to meet on Thursday to consider several bills
|
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will meet on Thursday, June 12, at the RISE of the House (approximately 5:30 p.m.) to consider several pieces of legislation.
The committee will consider the following bills:

2025-H 5298A, sponsored by Rep. Rebecca Kislak (D-Dist. 4, Providence), prohibits any questioning of a juvenile who is suspected of delinquent or criminal behavior, unless the parent of guardian of the juvenile is present, or unless an attorney is present or the juvenile and their parents have waived their presence.

2025-H 5441, sponsored by Rep. Cherie L. Cruz (D-Dist. 58, Pawtucket), reduces the time for expungements to three years for a single misdemeanor and five years for felonies and multiple misdemeanors.

2025-H 5500A, sponsored by Representative Kislak, amends provisions relative to confidentiality of health care communications and the process for requesting records and/or confidential health care information.

2025-H 5668A, sponsored by Rep. William W. O’Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence), prohibits the declawing of cats by any surgical procedure to amputate or modify a portion of a cat's paw in order to remove the cat's claws. Does not apply to any procedure performed for a therapeutic purpose.

2025-H 6122, sponsored by Rep. Joseph M. McNamara (D-Dist. 19, Warwick, Cranston), protects against discrimination based on disability in federally funded programs and activities, even if there is a change in the federal law.

2025-S 0618, sponsored by Sen. Tiara T. Mack (D-Dist. 6, Providence), provides an exemption for certain incarcerated persons from the payment of fees for a first request for vital statistics from the Department of Health.
The committee will also hear the following three bills:

2025-H 6385, sponsored by House Majority Leader Christopher R. Blazejewski (D-Dist. 2, Providence), makes technical amendments to the General Laws.

2025-S 0926, sponsored by Sen. Matthew L. LaMountain (D-Dist. 31, Warwick, Cranston), extends the immunity from alcohol- or drug-related offenses in cases of emergency overdose care to violations of bail conditions.

2025-H 6370, sponsored by Rep. Stephen M. Casey (D-Dist. 50, Woonsocket), provides greater clarity in insurance claim settlements, the appraisal process and procedural safeguards to enhance consumer protections against bad faith practices by insurers.
