MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee to vote on assault weapons ban on Tuesday
|
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, June 3, at 3 p.m. in the House Lounge of the State House to consider legislation (2025-H 5436A) sponsored by Rep. Jason Knight (D-Dist. 67, Barrington, Warren) that establishes the Rhode Island Assault Weapons Ban Act of 2025.
The committee will also reconsider legislation (2025-H 5130A) sponsored by Rep. Jennifer Boylan (D-Dist. 66, Barrington, East Providence), that would define “crime gun” and require law enforcement to submit any crime gun or test fired cartridges or casings to the state crime laboratory or the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) for ballistic testing and tracing.
On Thursday, June 5, at the RISE of the House (approximately 5:30 p.m.) in the House Lounge, the committee will consider the following bills:

2025-H 5348A and 2025-S 0269, sponsored by Rep. Edith H. Ajello (D-Dist. 1, Providence) and Sen. Melissa Murray (D-Dist. 24, Woonsocket, North Smithfield), that repeals the required HIV testing for an individual convicted under chapter 34.1 of title 11 (“commercial sexual activity”). It would also allow the option for HIV testing for any person convicted under this chapter.

2025-H 5674, sponsored by Rep. Joshua J. Giraldo (D-Dist. 56, Central Falls), prohibits a landlord from inquiring about the immigration status of a tenant subject to any federal laws or regulations, but may request financial information or proof of identity.

2025-H 6242, sponsored by Rep. Raymond A. Hull (D-Dist. 6, Providence, North Providence), replaces state marshals with capitol police as to those law enforcement officers being exempt from certain firearm restrictions.

2025-S 0296, sponsored by Senator Murray, repeals provisions that assess costs for women in the community corrections program for women offenders.

2025-S 0356, sponsored by Sen. Matthew L. LaMountain (D-Dist. 31, Warwick, Cranston), provides that a communication between an attorney and client acting as a trustee or other fiduciary, is privileged and protected from disclosure to the same extent as if the client was acting in his, her, or its individual capacity.
The committee will also hear testimony on the following bills:

2025-H 6369, sponsored by Rep. Susan R. Donovan (D-Dist. 69, Bristol, Portsmouth), allows the health care advocate to petition the Superior Court for the appointment of a receiver as deemed necessary or appropriate by the Court.

2025-H 6378, sponsored by Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence), provides for the sealing of eviction records under certain circumstances.
