5/29/2025 Rep. Morales calls on UnitedHealthcare and Brown University Health to swiftly reach a contract agreement
STATE HOUSE — Rep. David Morales is calling on UnitedHealthcare and Brown University Health to swiftly reach a contract agreement to keep Brown University Health’s hospitals in-network for UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage subscribers.

“Any health care plan serving Rhode Island must include our state’s largest hospitals as in-network locations. Similarly, our state’s largest health care network must make every effort to ensure that Rhode Island seniors have in-network access to its hospitals, regardless of which plan provider they have. Our seniors will be the ones who suffer the most from a drawn-out negotiation, potentially forced to pay out of pocket or divert from the closest or most appropriate hospital if this contract is not renewed in a timely manner. I urge both sides to reach an agreement quickly to restore certainty for our seniors and ensure they get the quality care they deserve,” said Representative Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence).

UnitedHealthcare and Brown University Health — formerly Lifespan — have been negotiating in advance of their hospital network agreement for Medicare Advantage plans expiring on July 1, 2025. According to UnitedHealthcare, this negotiation does not impact Brown University Health’s health care providers, who will remain in-network after July 1.

Subscribers to UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans received a letter this week from UnitedHealthcare informing them that starting on July 1, Brown University Health’s hospitals —including Rhode Island Hospital, Newport Hospital and Miriam Hospital — will no longer be in their plan’s network.
