MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets today to consider and hear legislation
|
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will meet today, Tuesday, May 27, at the RISE of the House (approximately 5:30 p.m.) in the House Lounge to consider the following bills:

2025-H 5222, sponsored by Rep. Robert E. Craven (D-Dist. 32, North Kingstown), establishes concurrent jurisdiction between the Rhode Island Family Court and the federal government for the purposes of adjudicating minors who have allegedly committed a crime while residing on a military installation located in Rhode Island.

2025-H 5263, sponsored by Rep. Deborah A. Fellela (D-Dist. 43, Johnston), amends the Safe Storage – Unsafe Storage of a Firearm law to Dillon’s Law. The law would be named after Dillon Viens, a Johnston youth who was tragically killed in a firearm accident.

2025-H 5265, sponsored by Rep. Matthew S. Dawson (D-Dist. 65, East Providence), defines the apportionment of financial responsibilities for expenses and improvements to the real property of the life estate between the life tenant and remainderman.

2025-H 5299, sponsored by Rep. Joseph M. McNamara (D-Dist. 19, Warwick, Cranston), directs RIHousing to work with stakeholders to investigate and determine ways to assist an incorporated homeowners' association to exercise rights to purchase leased land.

2025-H 5070 and 2025-S 0317, sponsored by Rep. Arthur J. Corvese (D-Dist. 55, North Providence) and Senate Majority Leader Frank A. Ciccone III (D-Dist. 7, Providence, Johnston), increases the maximum fees payable to sheriffs, sergeants, and constables for the service of writs, citations, or subpoenas, from $45 to $70.

2025-S 0354, sponsored by Sen. Andrew R. Dimitri (D-Dist. 25, Johnston), increases the per page transcription fees for court reporters in court proceedings.

2025-S 0730, sponsored by Sen. Matthew L. LaMountain (D-Dist. 31, Warwick, Cranston), exempts qualified tuition savings programs of any state from judicial attachment.

2025-S 0952, sponsored by Sen. David P. Tikoian (D-Dist. 22, Smithfield, North Providence, Lincoln), adds "debit cards" to the section of law relating to fraudulent use of credit cards.

2025-H 6245, sponsored by Rep. David J. Place (R-Dist. 47, Burrillville, Glocester), creates a bail task force to study the need of monetary conditions of bail and to consider other methods for ensuring an accused's appearance in court.

2025-H 6318, sponsored by Rep. Justine A. Caldwell (D-Dist. 30, East Greenwich, West Greenwich), requires every school bus, including buses used exclusively for to transport students receiving special education, to be equipped with a live digital video school bus violation detection monitoring system and retractable stop sign.

2025-H 6346, sponsored by Rep. Lauren H. Carson (D-Dist. 75, Newport), amends the Identity Theft Protection Act by eliminating current definitions and establishing new definitions. This act also raises the penalty provisions for violations.
