5/27/2025 Media Advisory: Municipal Government and Housing to meet Wednesday to consider municipal tax and renewable energy bills
STATE HOUSE — The House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing will meet Wednesday to vote on bills relating to municipal tax exemptions for veterans and the siting and taxing of renewable energy resources.

The committee is scheduled to meet tomorrow, Wednesday, May 28, at 4 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House. The committee is scheduled to vote on several bills, including:
  • 2025-H 5309 —This legislation introduced by Rep. Brandon T. Voas (D-Dist. 57, Cumberland, Central Falls) would increase the minimum veterans’ exemption for municipal taxes from $1,000 to $5,000. The committee will also consider an amendment to the bill.
  • 2025-H 5967 —This legislation introduced by Rep. June S. Speakman (D-Dist. 68, Warren, Bristol) would set municipal taxes of renewable energy resources at $5.00 per kilowatt hour of alternating current nameplate capacity for tangible property and $3.50 per kilowatt hour of alternating nameplate capacity for real property. It would also make the placement of a renewable energy resource on a previously contaminated property a by-right, permitted use under the zoning code for the municipality in which the renewable energy resource is located.
The committee will also consider and hear several bills related to local issues.

Written testimony must be submitted to HouseMunicipalGovernmentandHousing@rilegislature.gov. Testimony must include your name, the bill number, and your viewpoint, whether for, against, or neither. Sign-up sheets for in-person testimony will be available in the hearing room.

The meeting will be televised by Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. It will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.
