Rep. O’Brien praises passage of bill allowing purchase of nuclear power to cut electricity costs
|
STATE HOUSE – Rep. William W. O’Brien is praising the House passage of a bill that would allow utility companies to purchase nuclear power in order to save consumers money on their electricity bills.
The legislation (2025-H 5575) was introduced by Rep. Joseph J. Solomon Jr. (D-Dist. 22, Warwick) and cosponsored by Rep. William W. O’Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence). It would allow public utility companies that provide electric and gas distribution to participate in projects that allow for the reliable transmission of nuclear power. The bill would also allow the utility to procure nuclear power and enter into long-term contracts for nuclear power.
“The House of Representatives heard the public’s cry for cheaper energy prices loud and clear and I thank my colleagues for supporting this important measure that will bring utility costs down. I think it is irresponsible to not look into alternative energy sources that can help ease electricity costs that are crippling Rhode Islanders. Our residents are already stretched thin with the daily cost of living and this legislation will help alleviate the stress and anxiety that consumers are feeling every time they open up their electric bill,” said Representative O’Brien.
The legislation now heads to the Senate for consideration.
