House approves Rep. Biah’s bill to recognize Juneteenth holiday for retail businesses
|
STATE HOUSE – The House today approved legislation (2025-H 5250A) sponsored by Rep. Nathan W. Biah that would add Juneteenth National Freedom Day, observed on June 19, to the definition of “holidays” in the law regulating retail businesses in Rhode Island.
“When Juneteenth was finally recognized as a proper holiday, it was a glorious day for our state and country’s African American community. Now that this day of celebration has the respect and recognition that it deserves, we must update our employment laws to allow employees to celebrate the day that slavery finally ended in this country. This bill will do just that and I am proud to have introduced it in the House,” said Representative Biah (D-Dist. 3, Providence).
The legislation would add Juneteenth National Freedom Day to the list of holidays that includes Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Christmas and many other holidays, to the law that regulates how retail businesses operate on holidays.
The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
