5/12/2025 Senators Gu and Ujifusa to host Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration at State House
STATE HOUSE – Sen. Linda Ujifusa (D-Dist. 11, Portsmouth, Bristol) and Sen. Victoria Gu (D-Dist. 38, Westerly, Charlestown, South Kingstown), the first Asian Americans elected to the Rhode Island state legislature, will gather community and education leaders from across Rhode Island May 13 for a celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month at the State House.

The celebration will take place Tuesday, May 13, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the State Room on the second floor of the State House. All are welcome, but seating is limited. Refreshments will be served.

The event is a celebration of the diversity of cultures, breadth of achievement and remarkable contributions of these communities in Rhode Island. 

The keynote speakers will be Jeannie W. Salomon, founder and executive director of the  Asian American Pacific Islander History Museum/CSEBRI, and Setha Phongsavan, museum manager at the Asian American and Pacific Islander History Museum in Providence.

The event will be emceed by Chelsea Fernando, senior political organizer for the Working Families Party Rhode Island Chapter. There will be a vocal performance by Yohji Cantar Daquio of Daquio Studio, an opera singer and Classical High School Alumnus, Class of 2016. A dance will be performed by Okaze, a student-created dance crew featuring students and alumni of Classical High School, Central High School and Providence Career and Technical Academy.
