5/12/2025 Media Advisory: Senate Education Committee to hear bills on Providence schools, charter networks and mayoral academies
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Education Committee will hold hearings Wednesday on three bills concerning Providence schools, a bill prohibiting new network charter schools and a bill concerning the boards of mayoral academies. The committee is also scheduled to consider the appointment of former senator Dennis L. Algiere to the Board of Education, which was postponed from last week’s meeting.

The committee meets Wednesday, May 14, at 4 p.m. in Room 212 on the second floor of the State House. It is scheduled to consider:
  • The appointment of former senator Dennis L. Algiere to the Board of Education.
Scheduled to be heard are:
  • 2025-S 0389 — Sponsored by Sen. Melissa Murray (D-Dist. 24, Woonsocket, North Smithfield), this bill provides that no new network charter school application shall be granted.
  • 2025-S 0888 — This bill sponsored by Sen. Ryan W. Pearson (D-Dist. 19, Cumberland, Lincoln) provides that only mayors or town administrators could be  voting members of the board of directors or trustees for a mayoral academy.
  • 2025-S 0745, 2025-S 0746, 2025-S 0747 — These bills, all sponsored by Sen. Samuel D. Zurier (D-Dist. 3, Providence), would, respectively, provide a process for the dismissal and demotion for teachers or other persons assigned full-time to Providence schools, change the salary minimum schedule for Providence teachers and provide a process for Providence schools to suspend teachers if necessitated by a decrease in pupil population.
The meeting will be televised by Capitol Television on Cox channels 15 and 61 for high definition; i3Broadband (Formerly Full Channel) channel 15; and Verizon channel 34. Senate committee hearings may also air on Channel 75 for Cox Subscribers. Livestreaming is available at https://capitoltvri.cablecast.tv

Any written testimony must be emailed to SLegislation@rilegislature.gov prior to 3 p.m. Wednesday for the bills being heard that day in order for it to be provided to the members of the committee at the hearing and to be included in the meeting records. Testimony will become a public record.
