Media Advisory: Senate AI and Emerging Technologies Committee to hear bills today
|
STATE HOUSE — The Senate Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies Committee will meet today to hear bills related to identity theft, high-risk AI systems and a commission to study cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies.
The committee is scheduled to meet today, Monday, May 12, at 4 p.m. in Room 313 on the third floor of the State House to hear several bills, including:

2025-S 1037 — This bill introduced by Sen. Victoria Gu (D-Dist. 38, Westerly, Charlestown, South Kingstown), who also chairs this committee, would amend the Identity Theft Protection Act to modernize definitions. This act also raises the penalty provisions for violations.

2025-S 0627 — This legislation introduced by Sen. Louis P. DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Little Compton, Newport, Tiverton) would establish regulations to ensure the ethical development, integration and deployment of high-risk AI systems, particularly those influencing consequential decisions. This bill was scheduled to be heard on April 21 but was postponed when that meeting was cancelled.

2025-S 0373 — Also sponsored by Senator DiPalma, this bill would create a five-member commission to recommend legislative proposals for blockchain and cryptocurrency that would submit an interim progress report by January 5, 2026 and a final report by January 5, 2027. This bill was also scheduled to be heard on April 21 but was postponed when that meeting was cancelled.

The Senate Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies considers legislation and matters relating to emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, and their societal, ethical and policy implications.
