Senate approves Tikoian bill to allow one-year registration renewals on three-year leased vehicles
|
STATE HOUSE — The Senate today approved legislation introduced by Senate Majority Whip David P. Tikoian (D-Dist. 22, Smithfield, Lincoln, North Providence) that would allow the Division of Motor Vehicles to offer one-year registration renewals on vehicles that are leased for three years.
The bill (2025-S 0830) would authorize the DMV to issue one-year renewal registrations for vehicles leased for 36 months when the vehicle is registered in two-year cycles and would enable the agency to issue a credit to a registrant of a leased or purchased vehicle, who voluntarily cancels the registration within the period of registration.
“Vehicles are generally leased for three years, but here in Rhode Island, our registrations run in two-year cycles,” said Senator Tikoian. “So, when the registration is renewed for a vehicle on a 3three-year lease agreement, only one year of the registration renewal is needed. This bill would afford the registrant either a one-year option, or to be credited for the one year that they didn’t use. With the number of fees we pay, it’s only fair to the taxpayer that they be refunded for a registration they are no longer using.”
The measure now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.
