5/6/2025 Senate passes Leader Ciccone’s firefighter arbitration bill
STATE HOUSE – The Senate today passed legislation (2025-S 0856) sponsored by Majority Leader Frank A. Ciccone III that would continue firefighters’ contracts until a new agreement can be reached.

“Our brave and dedicated firefighters put their lives on the line every single day while protecting and saving Rhode Island’s residents and property.  These heroes deserve to be treated fairly during the collective bargaining process, and if a new contract has not been agreed upon, it’s only fair that our firefighters continue to save lives under their existing contract.  It’s the least we can do for our firefighters, who sacrifice their health and personal safety in order to keep us all safe from danger,” said Leader Ciccone (D-Dist. 7, Providence, Johnston).

The legislation would provide that all contractual provisions in a firefighters’ collective bargaining agreement would continue until a successor agreement has been reached, or an interest arbitration award has been rendered.

The bill now heads to the House for consideration, where Rep. David A. Bennett (D-Dist. 20, Warwick, Cranston) has introduced the legislation (2025-H 5133).
