5/1/2025 Senate approves Leader Ciccone’s bill that allows for increase in veterans tax exemption for Providence
STATE HOUSE – The Senate today approved legislation (2025-S 0720) sponsored by Majority Leader Frank A. Ciccone III that would authorize the Providence City Council to increase the veterans tax exemption.

“Providence’s veterans have not seen a tax relief increase in decades and we all know that the cost of living has gone up considerably over the past 25 years.  This bill will give Providence the power to help our veterans stay in their homes and afford the rising costs of daily necessities.  For all that our veterans have done for us, they deserve this needed tax relief that thanks them for their selfless service to our state and country,” said Leader Ciccone (D-Dist. 7, Providence, Johnston).

The legislation would authorize the Providence City Council to exempt from taxation a specified dollar amount of real and/or personal property for the following qualifying Providence residents:
  • Veterans of war
  • Unmarried spouses of veterans of war
  • Veterans or the unmarried widow or widower of veterans who are 100% totally disabled through service connected disability
  • Gold Star parents
  • Veterans who were prisoners of war
  • Using the exemption for specially adapted housing for veterans with paraplegia
The legislation now heads to the House for consideration, where Rep. Anthony J. DeSimone (D-Dist. 5, Providence) has introduced the legislation (2025-H 5307).  Representative DeSimone’s bill passed the House on March 27, and is scheduled to be heard today by the Senate Housing and Municipal Government Committee.
