Media Advisory: Municipal Government and Housing to hear local bills Thursday
|
STATE HOUSE — The House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing will meet Thursday to hear bills concerning local issues, including property tax deferrals, changes to the property tax classification system in Pawtucket and a property tax homestead exemption in Charlestown.
The committee is scheduled to meet Thursday, May 1, at the rise of the House, sometime after 4:30 p.m. in the House Lounge on the second floor of the State House. The committee is scheduled to hear several bills, including:

2025-H 6248 — This legislation sponsored by Rep. Megan L. Cotter (D-Dist. 39, Exeter, Richmond, Hopkinton) would enable any city or town council to adopt a property tax deferral program for senior citizens, disabled persons and veterans.

2025-H 6232 — This legislation sponsored by Rep. Mary Duffy Messier (D-Dist. 62, Pawtucket) would amend the property tax classification system for the city of Pawtucket. Class one property would be increased from five dwelling units to six dwelling units in which at least one unit is owner-occupied. This act would also establish class five property, which would include all residential real estate of not more than five units if no units are owner-occupied. This act would provide that class five property tax rates shall not be more than 175 percent of class one property tax rates.

2025-H 6247 — This legislation introduced by Rep. Tina L. Spears (D-Dist. 36, Charlestown, New Shoreham, South Kingstown, Westerly) would grant the Charlestown Town Council the authority to enact a homestead exemption ordinance for property taxes.
