Media Advisory: House committee to meet Tuesday, hear bill on Providence property tax increase
|
STATE HOUSE — The House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing will meet Tuesday to hear a bill to allow the city of Providence to increase property taxes by more than 4 percent in the upcoming fiscal year, as well as bills related to lead service line replacement and public water access in Jamestown and New Shoreham. The committee will also vote on a bill related to liquor licenses in Jamestown.
The committee is scheduled to meet tomorrow, Tuesday, April 22, at the rise of the House, sometime after 4:30 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House. The committee is scheduled to hear several bills, including:

2025-H 6162 — This legislation sponsored by Rep. Rebecca Kislak (D-Dist. 4, Providence) would grant Providence a one-year levy cap exemption for the fiscal year 2026 not to exceed 8 percent. This act is enabling legislation in furtherance of a unanimously passed Providence City Council resolution dated March 20, 2025, and approvingly signed by Mayor Brett Smiley on March 24, 2025.

2025-H 5375 — This legislation sponsored by Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence) would allow municipalities to enact ordinances that would permit municipalities and water suppliers to enter properties to perform lead service line replacements and permit tenants to request and schedule private side lead service line replacements with the local water supplier when the property owner is unresponsive to a request for service line replacement.

2025-H 6069 — This legislation introduced by Rep. Tina L. Spears (D-Dist. 36, Charlestown, New Shoreham, South Kingstown, Westerly) would stipulate that municipal water supply entities, including New Shoreham and Jamestown, would only be required to provide water service within their designated service areas.

2025-H 5032 — This legislation introduced by Rep. Alex S. Finkelman (D-Dist. 74, Jamestown, Middletown) would allow for the issuance of Class T liquor licenses by Jamestown.
