House passes Rep. Voas’ bill that authorizes municipal tax amnesty events
|
STATE HOUSE – The House today passed legislation (2025-H 5695) sponsored by Rep. Brandon T. Voas that would allow municipalities to organize local tax amnesty events once every three years.
“This bill allows municipalities to give their residents some well-deserved relief when it comes to their tax bills, while also benefitting municipalities because it would allow our cities and towns to collect taxes that may have otherwise went unpaid. It’s the right thing to do, it will keep people in their homes and it will bring in the vital revenue that’s needed for our municipalities to serve their residents well,” said Representative Voas (D-Dist. 57, Cumberland, Central Falls).
The bill would authorize municipalities to enact by ordinance one tax amnesty period every three years, during which a waiver of interest and penalties on overdue real estate and tangible tax payments may be made if the request for a waiver of interest and penalties is in writing, signed, and dated by the taxpayer by July 1 of the year in which the municipality has scheduled the waiver of penalties and interest.
The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration, where Sen. John P. Burke (D-Dist. 9, West Warwick) has introduced the legislation (2025-S 0123).
