Media Advisory: Rep. Morales, students to host event in support of ethnic studies courses
|
STATE HOUSE — Elected officials, teachers and activists will join students from OurSchoolsPVD Wednesday, April 9, at 4 p.m. in the State House Library on the second floor of the State House to call for the passage of legislation to establish ethnic studies courses in Rhode Island high schools.
The bill (2025-H 5744), sponsored by Representative Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence) and developed in partnership with Rhode Island high school students, would require every high school to offer a yearlong ethnic studies course studying Rhode Island and American history and the experiences of communities of color in Rhode Island and the United States. The bill would also establish an ethnic studies leadership council to oversee implementation of the curriculum.
Speakers at the event will include students, parents, teachers and elected officials, including Representative Morales and Providence City Council President Pro Tempore Juan M. Pichardo.
The Providence City Council unanimously approved a resolution supporting the bill and calling for its passage.
