STATE HOUSE – House Finance Committee Chairman Marvin L. Abney has been inducted into the Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame. The ceremony took place on March 28 at Fort Moore in Georgia.
The United States Army's Officer Candidate School (OCS) is an officer training program that trains, assesses, and evaluates potential U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve, and Army National Guard commissioned officers.
“This is a tremendous recognition that has humbled me beyond words. The Officer Candidate School made me into the man I am today and to be among its distinguished alumni in the Hall of Fame is a true honor that I will cherish for the remainder of my days. I was taught the value of public service within the school’s walls and I apply these values and lessons every single day when I serve the people of District 73 and Rhode Island. I thank the Army and the OCS for this honor and I pledge to continue serving the public with the ideals and principles that the OCS instilled in me many years ago,” said Chairman Abney (D-Dist. 73, Newport, Middletown).
Chairman Abney was inducted into the Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame Class of 2025 for his commitment to public service. He graduated from Officer Candidate School in 1976, and was commissioned into the Army as a Second Lieutenant. Throughout his 20-year Army career, Chairman Abney proved to be an exceptional soldier and leader, serving in roles such as a unit commander at NATO Headquarters and the Chief of Protocol and Foreign Liaison in Fort Hamilton, New York.
He retired from active duty as a Major in 1994. Following his Army career, Chairman Abney sought opportunities to continue leading within his community through public service. In 2012, he was elected to represent District 73 in the House of Representatives. In addition to his duties as House Finance Committee Chairman, he also serves on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, the House Committee on Conduct, and the Special Legislative Commission on Defense Economy Planning.
Chairman Abney has previously been recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of the Texarkana Independent School District, and as Omega Psi Phi Fraternity – Sigma Nu Chapter’s “Citizen of the Year.”
He serves on the National Conference of State Legislators’ (NCSL) Foundation Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Council of State Governments' (CSG) National Leadership Team and a member of the CSG Eastern Region Executive Committee.
