3/25/2025 Media Advisory: Committee to hear bills related to firefighter and police retirement benefits and compensation
STATE HOUSE — The House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing will meet Thursday to hear bills related to the qualified abandonment of municipal roads and the retirement benefits and ability of firefighters and police to earn money when retired. It will also vote on a bill to extend a state commission studying land use regulation.

The committee is scheduled to meet Thursday, March 27, at the rise of the House, sometime after 4:30 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House. The committee is scheduled to vote on one bill:
  • 2025-H 6027 — This legislation sponsored by Rep. Joshua J. Giraldo (D-Dist. 56, Central Falls) would extend the reporting and expiration dates of the Legislative Commission to Study the Entire Area of Land Use, Preservation, Development, Housing, Environment and Regulation from June 8, 2025, to June 8, 2026.
The committee will also hear several bills, including:
  • 2025-H 5960 — This legislation sponsored by Rep. Terri Cortvriend (D-Dist. 72, Portsmouth, Middletown) would allow for a qualified abandonment of public town roads which grants a public easement over said road allowing it to be converted to walking, biking and hiking trails and access to parks, nature preserves and other recreational facilities.
  • 2025-H 5230 — This legislation sponsored by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett) would provide an option for police and firefighters to receive retirement allowances, without reduction, who seek retirement after 20 years of service upon reaching age 57.
  • 2025-H 5271 — This legislation sponsored by House Municipal Government and Housing Chairman Stephen M. Casey (D-Dist. 50, Woonsocket) would authorize retired police officers and firefighters to earn income in addition to their earnable compensation so long as the amount would not exceed five times the rate of earnable compensation currently in force.
