MEDIA ADVISORY: Senate Judiciary Committee to hear sex assault bills Tuesday, public official bills Thursday
|
STATE HOUSE — The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to meet Tuesday and Thursday to hear testimony on several bills related to sexual assault, women’s rights, explicit images, public officials and constitutional amendments.
The committee is scheduled to meet Tuesday, March 25, at the rise of the Senate (about 5 p.m.) in Room 313 on the third floor of the State House.
The committee will hear testimony on several bills, including the following:
§ 2025-S 0278 — this bill, introduced by Sen. Melissa A. Murray (D-Dist. 24, Woonsocket, North Smithfield), would, under certain circumstances, provide immunity from arrest and prosecution for prostitution, procurement of sexual conduct for a fee, loitering for prostitution and soliciting from motor vehicles for indecent purposes.
§ 2025-S 0296 — this bill, introduced by Senator Murray, would repeal provisions that assess costs for women in the community corrections program for women offenders.
§ 2025-S 0136 — this bill, introduced by Sen. Elaine J. Morgan (R-Dist. 34, Hopkinton, Charlestown, Exeter, Richmond, West Greenwich), would criminalize the unauthorized dissemination of sexually explicit images of another person that are created by digital devices or created without the consent of the person depicted.
§ 2025-S 0562 — this bill, introduced by Senate Minority Leader Jessica de la Cruz (R-Dist. 23, North Smithfield, Burrillville, Glocester), would increase the minimum sentence for first degree sexual assault and provide that the first 10 years of a sentence for first degree sexual assault not be subject to a suspension or deferment of sentence.
§ 2025-S 0565 — this bill, introduced by Senate Minority Whip Gordon E. Rogers (R-Dist. 21, Foster, Scituate, Coventry, West Greenwich), would provide for a 10-year statute of limitations for the violation of second-degree sexual assault.
The committee will also meet on Thursday, March 27, at the rise of the Senate in Room 313 to hear testimony on several bills including the following:
§ 2025-S 0729 — this bill, introduced by Senate Majority Whip David P. Tikoian (D-Dist. 22, Smithfield, Lincoln, North Providence), would consider election officials and poll workers “public officials” for purposes of the prohibition on making threats to public officials.
§ 2025-S 0288 — this bill, introduced by Sen. Samuel W. Bell (D-Dist. 5, Providence), would provide that, for the general officers of the state, no person could be elected to the same general office more than twice.
§ 2025-S 0308 — this bill, introduced by Sen. Leonidas P. Raptakis (D-Dist. 33, Coventry, West Greenwich), would propose an amendment to the State Constitution that would provide the governor with a line item veto on the budget and other bills for the appropriation of money.
§ 2025-S 0538 — this bill, introduced by Sen. Jacob Bissaillon (D-Dist. 1, Providence), would provide a remedy for any harm caused due to deprivation or violation of rights secured by the Rhode Island Constitution due to acts of the State of Rhode Island.
