3/24/2025 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Committee on Corporations to hear legislation related to unfair insurance practices
STATE HOUSE — The House Committee on Corporations will meet Tuesday to hear testimony on legislation related to insurance companies and practices, including bills that would stop insurance companies from basing premiums on geographical location.

The committee will meet Tuesday, March 25, at the rise of the House (about 5 p.m.) in Room 135 on the first floor of the State House.

The committee will hear several bills related to insurance, including:

§  2025-H 5104 —This bill, introduced by Rep. Arthur J. Corvese (D-Dist. 55, North Providence), would forbid a motor vehicle liability insurance carrier from considering the ZIP code of where an insured lives for purposes of calculating their policy premium.
§  2025-H 5416 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Enrique George Sanchez (D-Dist. 9, Providence), would prohibit auto insurance companies from using certain race and geographical locations criteria when determining insurance rates.
§  2025-H 5043 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Samuel A. Azzinaro (D-Dist. 37, Westerly), would provide protection from and prevent the unethical, improper conduct and the collection of fees by anyone advising or assisting a veteran filing a claim for disability benefits with the Department of Veterans Affairs except as authorized by federal law.
§  2025-H 5333—This bill, introduced by Representative Azzinaro, would require homeowner’s insurance providers to provide two months' notice before increasing any policy more that 20%. Also caps rate increases for policy holders that are 65 years of age or older and meet certain income limits.
§  2025-H 5570 — This bill, introduced by Rep. Patricia Serpa (D-Dist. 27, West Warwick, Coventry), would prohibit an insurance carrier from assessing a premium surcharge against an insured for making an inquiry regarding the terms of their policy.
 
The Committee on Corporations is chaired by Rep. Joseph J. Solomon Jr. (D-Dist. 22, Warwick). The meeting will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.
