3/18/2025 Sen. Euer media literacy education bill to be heard in committee Wednesday
STATE HOUSE — The Senate Education Committee will hear testimony on a bill from Sen. Dawn Euer to improve the critical thinking skills of students by adding media literacy to the standards of civic education taught in Rhode Island schools.

“The ability to distinguish the trustworthiness of a story, post, video or other piece of media is an essential skill to actively participate in our civic society. As a state that values civic education, it’s time to make sure our graduating students have been taught media literacy skills alongside the rest of their education,” said Senator Euer (D-District 13, Newport, Jamestown). “Teaching our students critical thinking skills and the ability to distinguish between credible news and biased content will give them the tools they need to operate effectively in our increasingly digital world, both in their public lives and in their careers.”

Senator Euer was inspired by similar programs in Finland, a country that ranks high in overall educational outcomes and first among European nations in resistance to misinformation.

Senator Euer’s bill (2025-S 0638) is scheduled to be heard by the Senate Education Committee tomorrow, Wednesday, March 19, at 4 p.m. in Room 313 on the third floor of the State House.

Any written testimony must be emailed to SLegislation@rilegislature.gov prior to 3 p.m. Wednesday in order for it to be provided to the members of the committee at the hearing and to be included in the meeting records.

The meeting will be televised by Capitol Television on Cox channels 15 and 61 for high definition; i3Broadband channel 15; and Verizon channel 34. Senate committee hearings may also air on Channel 75 for Cox Subscribers. Livestreaming is available at https://capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.
