Media Advisory: Municipal Government and Housing to hear Providence tax bills Tuesday
|
STATE HOUSE — The House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing will meet Tuesday to hear two bills to allow the city of Providence to increase property taxes by more than 4% in the upcoming fiscal year, as well as bills related to coastal rights-of-way and public water access in Jamestown.
The committee is scheduled to meet Tuesday, March 4, at the rise of the House, sometime after 4:30 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House. The committee is scheduled to hear several bills, including:

2025-H 5368 — This legislation introduced by Rep. Scott A. Slater (D-Dist. 10, Providence) at the request of the city of Providence would allow the city to raise property taxes by more than the 4% increase permitted by state law in the 2026 fiscal year only.

2025-H 5966 — This legislation introduced by Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence) would allow the city of Providence to raise property taxes by more than the 4% increase permitted by state law in the 2026 fiscal year, provided that the increase did not exceed 7% and would exempt residential properties from any 2026 property tax increase, unless they are designated as short-term rentals.

2025-H 5686 — This legislation introduced by Rep. Kathleen A. Fogarty (D-Dist. 35, South Kingstown) at the request of the Coastal Resources Management Council would requires municipalities to maintain and update a list of CRMC designated rights-of-way to tidal areas in their municipality.

2025-H 5511 — This legislation introduced by Rep. Alex S. Finkelman (D-Dist. 74, Jamestown, Middletown) would allow the commissioners of the water and sewer commission of Jamestown to limit its public water system’s obligation to supply water to only within the commission’s designated and described area as opposed to the entire land area of the town.
The committee will also vote on bills related to local non-profits and hear bills related to local issues.
