Media Advisory: Primary care education commission meeting Monday

Dr. Robert M. Califf, head of Food and Drug Administration under Presidents Biden and Obama, to speak
STATE HOUSE – The special legislative commission studying Rhode Island’s health care workforce and issues related to educating and retaining primary care physicians will meet Monday with several leaders in the medical field, including Dr. Robert M. Califf, who was head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under Presidents Biden and Obama. Califf will participate virtually via WebEx.
The Special Legislative Commission to Make a Comprehensive Study of Rhode Island’s Healthcare Workforce Related to educating and Retaining Primary Care Physicians and Establishing a State Medical School at the University of Rhode Island is scheduled to meet Monday, Jan. 27, at 5:30 p.m. in the Senate Lounge on the second floor of the State House.
On the agenda are presentations by Care Transformation Collaborative Executive Director Debra Hurwitz; Dr. Stephen J. Spann, the recently retired founding dean of the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston; and Califf, who was the federal commissioner of food and drugs from 2016-2017 and again from 2022-2025.
No public testimony will be taken at this meeting.
The meeting will be televised by Capitol Television, which can be seen by Cox Communications subscribers on channels 15 and 61 for high definition, on channel 15 by i3Broadband viewers, and channel 34 for Verizon subscribers. Co-chaired by Sen. Pamela J. Lauria (D-Dist. 32, Barrington, Bristol, East Providence) and URI President Marc B. Parlange, the 21-member commission is tasked with studying Rhode Island’s health care workforce related to educating and retaining primary care physicians.
