1/7/2025 LaMountain elected deputy president pro tempore of Senate, named chairman of the Judiciary Committee
STATE HOUSE — The Senate today re-elected Sen. Matthew L. LaMountain (D-Dist. 31, Warwick, Cranston) as its deputy president pro tempore. In that position, he will be responsible, along with President Pro Tempore Hanna M. Gallo (D-Dist. 27, Cranston, West Warwick), for presiding over the Senate in the absence of the president.

In addition, President of the Senate Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence) appointed Senator LaMountain chairman of the Judiciary Committee. He will also serve on the Committee on Rules, Government Ethics and Oversight, as well as the Committee on Special Legislation and Veterans’ Affairs.

The Senate Judiciary Committee handles all legislation and matters that affect the penal code, judicial system, ethics, open meetings, access to public records and election laws. It also considers the gubernatorial appointments of judges and magistrates through the senatorial function of advice and consent.

The Senate Committee on Rules, Government Ethics and Oversight is charged with monitoring the performance of public organizations and agencies, considering all legislation relating to government ethics, and all matters relating to the operating rules, functions and protocols of the Senate.

The Senate Committee on Special Legislation and Veterans’ Affairs hears legislation and matters relating to constitutional amendments, liquor laws, commissions, resolutions, veterans’ affairs and laws relating to domestic animals.

Senator LaMountain was elected to the chamber in November 2022. He has extensive experience in public service and the practice of law. He served as a prosecutor in the Rhode Island Office of Attorney General from 2011 to 2019. From 2019 to 2021, he served as assistant city solicitor for the City of Warwick. He is a member of the Suffolk Law Public Interest Group and currently operates his own law practice in Warwick.
