10/1/2024 Rep. Biah appointed chair of MLK commission
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Nathan W. Biah (D-Dist. 3, Providence) has been appointed the chairman of the Martin Luther King Jr. State Holiday Commission.

Representative Biah is also a member of the House Finance Committee, the Education Committee and the Innovation, Internet and Technology Committee.

“It is an incredible honor to lead this important commission that keeps the lessons, history and teachings of Dr. King alive year after year, and the annual celebration of his life is an event I look forward to every January.  I thank Deputy Speaker Hull for his years of service chairing the commission and I am excited to follow in his footsteps in making sure that the coming celebration is worthy of Dr. King’s legacy and message,” said Representative Biah.

The Martin Luther King Commission was created by state law to plan and carry out an annual celebration to commemorate the birthday of Dr. King in January.  The official holiday commemoration includes remarks by commission members, state and religious leaders, several musical presentations, and a number of awards are presented to community members and students.

Representative Biah was elected to the House of Representatives in November 2020, and he is the principal at Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School in Providence.
