House approves Rep. McEntee’s bill eliminating statute of limitations for second-degree sex assault
|
STATE HOUSE – The House of Representatives today approved legislation sponsored by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee that would eliminate the statute of limitations for second-degree sexual assault criminal cases.
“Sexual assault is one of the most vile and despicable crimes an individual can commit and the damage it causes to victims lasts a lifetime. The way victims process the crimes committed against them also varies from individual to individual and that includes finding the ability to speak about and report the assault. This is why we need to eliminate the statute of limitations for second-degree sexual assault crimes, because at the end of the day, sexual assaulters should not be able to avoid accountability and victims deserve justice, no matter how much time has passed since the assault,” said Representative McEntee.
In addition to eliminating the statute of limitations on second-degree sexual assault, the legislation (2024-H 7629) also provides for a 10 year statute of limitations for third-degree sexual assault.
The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
