5/1/2024 Media Advisory: Senate and House to vote on Washington Bridge reporting bills
STATE HOUSE — The Senate and House will vote Thursday on legislation introduced by Senate Majority Whip Valarie J. Lawson and House Majority Whip Katherine S. Kazarian to require regular monthly updates from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation on the state of the Washington Bridge.

This legislation (2024-S 2727A, 2024-H 7759A) would mandate that RIDOT provide monthly reports on developments related to the Washington Bridge to the General Assembly and the Governor’s Office. It would require the first report be submitted within 30 days of the legislation being signed into law and that reports continue until the restoration of the bridge.

The Senate will vote during Thursday’s session May 2, at 4 p.m. in the Senate chamber on the second floor of the State House. Among the other bills being put to a vote are:
  • 2024-S 2262A — The Healthcare Provider Shield Act introduced by Sen. Dawn Euer (D-Dist. 13, Newport, Jamestown) would create a protective legal shield for healthcare providers, precluding any civil or criminal action by other states or persons against healthcare providers who provide care to persons seeking access to transgender health care services and reproductive healthcare services provided in Rhode Island.
  • 2024-S 2767A — This bill introduced by Sen. Pamela J. Lauria (D-Dist. 32, Barrington, Bristol, East Providence) would allow victims of sexual assault to submit a medical forensic exam performed by a licensed health care provider in lieu of a police report in order to establish eligibility for funds under the State Crime Victim Compensation Program.
The House will vote during Thursday’s session May 2, at 4 p.m. in the House chamber on the second floor of the State House. Among the other bills being put to a vote are:
  • 2024-H 7040A — This bill introduced by Rep. Samuel A. Azzinaro (D-Dist. 37, Westerly) would create a Blue Envelope Program to improve communication between police officers and people with autism, modeled on successful programs in other states, including Massachusetts.
  • 2024-H 7713A — This bill introduced by Rep. Jennifer Boylan (D-Dist. 66, Barrington, East Providence) would expand the legal use of electric bicycles in Rhode Island by modernizing their classification and regulation.
  • 2024-H 7387A — This bill introduced by Rep. Jacquelyn Baginski (D-Dist. 17, Cranston) would ban the use of synthetic media or “deepfakes” within 90 days of any election unless that media discloses that it has been manipulated or generated with artificial intelligence.
Both sessions will be televised by Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. They will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.
