House passes Chairman Craven’s bill to allow Family Court magistrates to hear contested divorces
|
STATE HOUSE – The House of Representatives today passed legislation (2024-H 7271) sponsored by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert E. Craven that allows magistrates in the Family Court to hear contested divorce cases.
“With our court system consistently being overworked, this bill will allow Family Court magistrates to help with the steady stream of divorce caseloads at no extra cost to the taxpayers. This change in law will also speed up the closing of contested divorce cases, allowing parties to move on with their lives at a quicker pace while also freeing up resources for other matters before the Family Court, as well,” said Chairman Craven (D-Dist. 32, North Kingstown).
The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
