4/29/2024 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Tuesday for votes and testimony
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will meet this week on Tuesday, April 30 at the RISE of the House (approximately 4:45 p.m.) in the House Lounge to vote on several bills and to hear testimony on a variety of legislation.
           
The committee will vote on the following bills:
  • 2024-H 7075, sponsored by Rep. John G. Edwards (D-Dist. 70, Tiverton), provides that the trapping and subsequent release of any unowned feral or free roaming cat for the purpose of spaying or neutering of the cat would not be considered abandonment.
  • 2024-H 7447, sponsored by Rep. Matthew S. Dawson (D-Dist. 65, East Providence), considers election officials and poll workers "public officials" for purposes of the prohibition on making threats to public officials.
  • 2024-H 7571A, sponsored by Rep. Gregory J. Costantino (D-Dist. 44, Lincoln, Smithfield, Johnston), amends the law consistent with the advent of iGaming and new technology and codifies the payment of investigatory expenses incurred by the State in limited circumstances.
  • 2024-H 7951A, sponsored by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert E. Craven (D-Dist. 32, North Kingstown), provides amendments relative to the compliance and implementation of the comprehensive planning and use act including the conditions upon which limitations may be placed on land use applications by municipalities.  The bill is part of Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi’s (D-Dist. 23, Warwick) legislative housing package.
The committee is also scheduled to hear testimony on the following bills:
  • 2024-H 7050, sponsored by Rep. Sherry Roberts (R-Dist. 29, West Greenwich, Coventry), increases minimum sentence for first degree sexual assault and provides first 10 years of a sentence for first degree sexual assault not be subject to a suspension or deferment of sentence.
  • 2024-H 7168, sponsored by Rep. Julie A. Casimiro (D-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter), creates "Harter's Law" to extend the civil statute of limitations for injuries resulting from first degree child abuse to 35 years.
  • 2024-H 7235, sponsored by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett), makes all sexual abuse or exploitation of a child causes of action not subject to statute of limitations whether lapsed or time-barred.
The meeting will be televised by Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. It will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv/.
