4/8/2024 Media Advisory: Senate Judiciary Committee to hear variety of bills
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Judiciary Committee will meet Thursday to hear a variety of bills, including several pertaining to elections.

The committee is scheduled to meet Thursday, April 11, at the rise of the Senate sometime after 4:30 p.m. in Room 313 on the third floor of the State House to hear numerous bills, including:
  • 2024-S 2662 — This bill introduced by Sen. Mark P. McKenney (D-Dist. 30, Warwick) proposes a state constitutional amendment to provide no person could hold office as general officer unless that person was a resident and a registered voter in Rhode Island for at least five years, continuously, prior to taking office.
  • 2024-S 2894 — This bill introduced by Sen. Leonidas P. Raptakis (D-Dist. 33, Coventry West Greenwich) would allow unaffiliated voters to vote in party primaries without becoming affiliated.
  • 2024-S 2895 — Sponsored by Sen. Tiara Mack (D-Dist. 6, Providence), this bill would allow citizens of a city or town who are at least 16 years old to register to vote and to vote in school committee elections in municipalities where school committees are elected entities.
Written testimony must be submitted to the committee clerk at senatejudiciary@rilegislature.gov prior to 3 p.m. on Thursday in order for it to be provided to the members of the committee at the hearing and to be included in the meeting records.

The meeting will be televised by Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. It will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.
