3/27/2024 MEDIA ADVISORY: 203rd anniversary of Greece’s independence celebration set for March 28 at the State House
31st consecutive year of celebrating Greek Independence Day at the State House

STATE HOUSE – The 203rd anniversary of Greek Independence Day will be celebrated tomorrow, March 28 at 4:30 p.m. in the State Library at the State House.

The recognition of Greece's Independence and the participation of Rhode Island's Greek American communities is held under the sponsorship of Sen. Leonidas P. Raptakis (D-Dist. 33, Coventry, East Greenwich, West Greenwich) in cooperation with the Greek Orthodox Churches of Rhode Island.

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Cranston, the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Pawtucket and St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church of Newport will participate in the celebration.

Symeon Tegos, Consul General of Greece to New England will be joined by representatives of Rhode Island’s Greek Orthodox churches on their visit to the State House. 

The celebration will begin in the Senate chamber where Father Aaron Walker of the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church will deliver the opening invocation for the Senate session.  A Senate resolution honoring the 203rd anniversary of Greek Independence Day sponsored by Senator Raptakis will be introduced and read into the Senate record.

Following the Senate session, at 4:30 p.m. in the State Library, Senator Raptakis will be joined by the Greek dignitaries, the state’s General Officers, fellow legislators and members of Rhode Island’s Greek community to celebrate and recognize Greek Independence Day.

Following the event at the State House, a reception will be held at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, located at 175 Oaklawn Avenue in Cranston.

Greek Independence Day is celebrated annually on March 25, commemorating the start of the War of Greek Independence in 1821.
