3/25/2024 Media Advisory: Senate Health and Human Services Committee to consider health insurance commissioner appointment

STATE HOUSE – The Senate Health and Human Services Committee is scheduled to meet Thursday to consider the governor’s appointment of Acting Health Insurance Commissioner Cory B. King to take the position permanently. The committee will also hold hearings on  numerous bills at that meeting, and will meet on Tuesday for hearings as well.

The committee meets tomorrow, Tuesday, March 26, at 4 p.m. in the Senate Lounge on the second floor of the State House for hearings on the following bills:
  • 2024-S 2379 — Sponsored by Sen. Tiara Mack (D-Dist. 6, Providence), this bill would specify the requirements and procedures for licensing lactation consultants.
  • 2024-S 2622 — This bill sponsored by Sen. Bridget Valverde (D-Dist. 35, North Kingstown, East Greenwich, South Kingstown) requires food service establishments to add an additional warning to their menus relative to food allergens and impose a civil penalty on those establishments that fail to include the required warnings on their menus.
  • 2024-S 2627 — Sponsored by Sen. Pamela J. Laura (D-Dist. 32, Barrington, Bristol, East Providence) this bill would require that all restaurants offering children’s meals offer at least two that comply with certain nutritional standards.
The committee meets again Thursday, March 28, at the rise of the Senate session (sometime after 4:30 p.m.) in the Senate Lounge on the second floor of the State House, when it will hold a hearing on King’s nomination, as well as hearings on bills, including:
  • 2024-S 2377 — This bill sponsored by Senator Mack would establish, encourage and support the establishment of family councils in managed residential communities providing assisted living services.
  • 2024-S 2388 — Sponsored by Sen. Sandra Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket), this bill would establish that all home health care patients are entitled to receive home health care services regardless of their permanent or temporary residence.
  • 2024-S 2621— Sponsored by Senator Valverde, the Nursing Home Workforce Standards Board Act would establish and enforce industrywide quality of care standards in nursing homes.
Both meetings will be televised on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. They will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.

Testimony will be accepted in person or in writing. Written testimony must be submitted prior to 3 p.m. the day of the applicable meeting in order for it to be provided to the members of the committee at the hearing and to be included in the meeting records.
