Media Advisory: Senate Environment Committee to hear climate change bills Wednesday
|
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Environment and Agriculture Committee will meet Wednesday to hear three bills relating to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and tracking the effects of climate change, in addition to four other bills related to environmental justice, littering and the management of freshwater lakes and ponds.
The Senate Environment and Agriculture Committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday, March 27, at 4 p.m. in the Senate Lounge on the second floor of the State House to hear seven bills, including:

2024-S 2543 — The Lead by Example Act, introduced by Sen. Joshua Miller (D-Dist. 28, Cranston, Providence), would reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and landfill waste produced by state agencies by adding four entries to the general laws regarding state purchasing, covering electric vehicles, renewable energy, recycling and compost and plastic bottle use.

2024-S 2541 — This bill, introduced by Senate Environment Committee Chairwoman Alana M. DiMario (D-Dist. 36, Narragansett, New Shoreham, North Kingstown), would require the executive climate change coordinating council to develop a template to be used by all agencies of the state to track their climate emissions to uphold the pathway to Rhode Island’s Act on Climate legislative goals.

2024-S 2296 — This bill, introduced by Sen. Pamela J. Lauria (D-Dist. 32, Barrington, Bristol, East Providence), would add climate change, sea-level rise and coastal resiliency to the strategic plan for economic development.
Written testimony must be submitted to the committee clerk at slegislation@rilegislature.gov prior to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, in order for it to be provided to the members of the committee at the hearing and to be included in the meeting records. Sign-up sheets for in-person testimony will be available in the hearing room.
