3/19/2024 Media Advisory: Senate Environment Committee to hear bills banning PFAS, microplastics Wednesday
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Environment and Agriculture Committee will meet Wednesday to hear two bills banning the manufacture and sale of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and microplastics, along with four other bills relating to pollution and hazardous waste, pesticide use and rodenticide use.

The Senate Environment and Agriculture Committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday, March 20, at 4 p.m. in the Senate Lounge on the second floor of the State House to hear six bills, including:
  • 2024-S 2152 — The Comprehensive PFAS Ban Act of 2024, introduced by Sen. Meghan E. Kallman (D-Dist. 15, Pawtucket, Providence), would prohibit the intentional addition of PFAS in products offered for sale or manufactured in Rhode Island starting January 1, 2027.
  • 2024-S 2300 — The Microplastics Reduction Act, introduced by Sen. Sandra Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket), would prohibit a manufacturer from selling, offering for sale, or distributing any product containing synthetic polymer microparticles beginning January 1, 2028.
  • 2024-S 2296 — This bill, introduced by Sen. Joshua Miller (D-Dist. 28, Cranston, Providence), would prohibit the application of lawn care pesticides on school grounds, except in emergency situations.
Written testimony must be submitted to the committee clerk at slegislation@rilegislature.gov prior to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, in order for it to be provided to the members of the committee at the hearing and to be included in the meeting records. Sign-up sheets for in-person testimony will be available in the hearing room.
