MEDIA ADVISORY: Senate Finance and Education Committees meet tomorrow to hear Education Dept. budgets and education legislation
|
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Finance and Education Committees will hold a joint hearing on Tuesday, March 19 at the RISE of the Senate (approximately 4:45 p.m.) in the Senate Lounge of the State House to hear testimony on a department budget, a FY 25 budget article and on several pieces of legislation relating to education.
The Finance Committee is chaired by Sen. Louis P. DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Little Compton, Newport, Tiverton) and the Education Committee is chaired by Sen. Sandra Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket).
The joint committee hearing will hear testimony on the FY 24 Supplemental and FY 25 budgets for the Department of Education. Testimony on Article 8 in the FY 25 budget, relating to education, will also be heard.
Among the legislation scheduled to be heard are:

2024-S 2168, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Ryan W. Pearson (D-Dist. 19, Cumberland, Lincoln), directs the Department of Education to develop and adopt regulations for energy capable school buildings.

2024-S 2053, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Jessica de la Cruz (R-Dist. 23, North Smithfield, Burrillville, Glocester), establishes a new educational program that allows students to enroll in public and private schools of their choice.

2024-S 2310, sponsored by Sen. Frank A. Ciccone (D-Dist. 7, Providence, Johnson), restores longevity payments of 5% of base salary for employees after 10 years of service and increase to 10% of base salary after 20 years of service, beginning July 1, 2024.

2024-S 2546, sponsored by Sen. Bridget G. Valverde (D-Dist. 35, North Kingstown, East Greenwich, South Kingstown), modifies the current law to allow for approval of construction projects within school districts, rather than needing the project to be commenced by a certain date, permitting the municipality to take advantage of the state's enhanced school bonuses.
