3/11/2024 Media Advisory: Senate Judiciary Committee to hear firearms bills Tuesday
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Judiciary Committee will meet Tuesday to hear a bill requiring safe storage of firearms in Rhode Island, along with 18 other bills related to the regulation of firearms.

The committee is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, March 12, at 4 p.m. in Room 313 on the third floor of the State House to hear 19 bills, including:
  • 2024-S 2202 — This bill, introduced by Sen. Pamela J. Lauria (D-Dist. 32, Barrington, Bristol, East Providence), would require safe storage of firearms and require trigger locks to be sold with rifles and shotguns.
  • 2024-S 2653 — This bill, introduced by Sen. Louis P. DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Little Compton, Newport, Tiverton), would ban the sale, possession and transfer of assault weapons in Rhode Island.
  • 2024-S 2218 — This bill, introduced by Sen. Mark P. McKenney (D-Dist. 30, Warwick) would require purchasers of firearms to take a basic safety test and require the Department of Environmental Management to review the test every two years and update it as appropriate.
Written testimony must be submitted to the committee clerk at senatejudiciary@rilegislature.gov prior to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, in order for it to be provided to the members of the committee at the hearing and to be included in the meeting records. Sign-up sheets for in-person testimony will be available in the hearing room.

The committee is also scheduled to meet on Thursday, March 14, at the rise of the Senate sometime after 4:30 p.m. in Room 313 on the third floor of the State House to hear 10 bills, including:
  • 2024-S 2027 — This bill, introduced by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairwoman Dawn Euer (D-Dist. 13, Newport, Jamestown), would allow the owner of real property to execute a deed that names one or more beneficiaries who will obtain title to the property without the necessity of probate.
  • 2024-S 2206 — This bill, introduced by Sen. Frank S. Lombardi (D-Dist. 26, Cranston), would allow a homebuyer to void a purchase and sales agreement prior to the transfer if the seller fails to provide a written sales disclosure.
Written testimony must be submitted prior to 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, in order for it to be provided to the members of the committee at the hearing and to be included in the meeting records. Sign-up sheets for in-person testimony will be available in the hearing room.
