3/11/2024 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Wednesday to hear firearm legislation testimony
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on Wednesday, March 13 at 3 p.m. in the House Lounge of the State House to hear testimony on several bills that relate to firearms.
           
Among the legislation being heard by the committee are the following bills:
  • 2024-H 7217, sponsored by Rep. Jason Knight (D-Dist. 67, Barrington, Warren), bans the possession, sale, and transfer of assault weapons. Possession of assault weapons owned on the effective date of this act would be "grandfathered". Violations are punishable by a fine or imprisonment.
  • 2024-H 7269, sponsored by Rep. Jennifer Boylan (D-Dist. 66, Barrington, East Providence), prohibits the purchase of more than one firearm in any 30-day period.
  • 2024-H 7270, sponsored by Rep. Thomas E. Noret (D-Dist. 25, Coventry, West Warwick), provides the review and appeal process for individuals applying for a permit or license to carry a handgun with the licensing authority or the attorney general.
  • 2024-H 7373, sponsored by Rep. Justine A. Caldwell (D-Dist. 30, East Greenwich, West Greenwich), requires the safe storage of firearms and provides civil and criminal penalties for violations.
  • 2024-H 7751, sponsored by Rep. Matthew S. Dawson (D-Dist. 65, East Providence), punishes as a felony act unlawfully discharging a firearm or incendiary or explosive substance or device with the intent to hit or fire into any unoccupied dwelling, building, other structure or ship, automobile or other conveyance.
  • 2024-H 7827, sponsored by Rep. Patricia A. Serpa (D-Dist. 27, West Warwick, Coventry), disqualifies individuals with prior felony convictions from purchasing or possessing a firearm.
