3/11/2024 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Tuesday for one vote and bill testimony
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on Tuesday, March 12 at the RISE of the House (approximately 4:45 p.m.) in the House Lounge of the State House to vote on one bill and to hear testimony on several others.
           
The committee will consider legislation (2024-H 7239) sponsored by Rep. Terri Cortvriend (D-Dist. 72, Portsmouth, Middletown) which provides that supported decision-making be added to the Limited Guardianship and Guardianship of Adults forms section as one of the less restrictive alternatives to guardianship that have been explored.
           
Among the testimony being heard are the following bills:
  • 2024-H 7368, sponsored by Rep. Anthony J. DeSimone (D-Dist. 5, Providence), enables municipalities to install and use automated systems to detect noise limit violations in order to enhance enforcement abilities and reduce noise violations state-wide.  The bill was introduced on behalf of the City of Providence.
  • 2024-H 7376, sponsored by Representative Cortvriend, requires written acknowledgment from any buyer of oceanfront or shoreline property that they have been informed of the public's rights and privileges of the shore.
  • 2024-H 7574, sponsored by Rep. Alex S. Finkelman (D-Dist. 74, Jamestown, Middletown), comprehensively regulates the practices of third-party litigation financers in Rhode Island.
  • 2024-H 7644, sponsored by Rep. Joseph J. Solomon (D-Dist. 22, Warwick), allows college athletes and prospects to enter into contracts to receive compensation for use of their name, image and likeness rights and would prohibit colleges and athletic associations from interfering with such compensation rights.
  • 2024-H 7748, sponsored by Rep. Scott A. Slater (D-Dist. 10, Providence), authorizes the use of automated traffic violation monitoring systems for all traffic signal laws, including the "Don't Block the Box Statute" and allows for jurisdiction of the Don't Block the Box statute violations to be within a municipal court.  The bill was introduced on behalf of the City of Providence.
