2/2/2024 Media Advisory: Providence Schools study commission to meet Monday
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Legislative Commission to Review and Provide Recommendations for Professional and Labor-Management Standards that Provide School-Based Flexibility and Accountability for Employees of the Providence Public Schools is scheduled to meet Monday, Feb. 5, at 5 p.m. in the Senate Lounge on the second floor of the State House to continue discussing and reviewing the draft commission report. There will be no public testimony at this meeting.

The meeting will be televised live by Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. It will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.

The commission is led by Sen. Samuel D. Zurier (D-Dist. 3, Providence), sponsor of the legislation (2023-S 1131) creating it. Its purpose is to review the professional standards and the labor-management relationship for employees of the Providence Public Schools and develop recommendations that promote a rewarding professional environment and great school-based flexibility and accountability for the district’s professional educators.

In addition to Chairman Zurier, the commission includes Senate Minority Leader Jessica de la Cruz (R-Dist. 23, North Smithfield, Burrillville, Glocester), Sen. Meghan E. Kallman (D-Dist. 15, Pawtucket, Providence), Providence Public Schools Deputy Superintendent of Operations Zachary Scott, Rhode Island Department of Education Deputy Commissioner of Instructional Programs Lisa Odom-Villella, Thomas Kerr-Vanderslice of the City of Providence, Providence City Councilman Justin Roias, Providence Public School Board President Erlin Rogel, Mt. Pleasant High School Principal Wobberson Torchon, Providence Teachers Union President Maribeth Calabro, Jeremy Sencer of the Rhode Island Federation of Teachers, high school student Marcus Tremblay, former Superintendent of Providence Public Schools Susan Lusi, former Providence Teachers Union President Steve Smith, and former Providence City Councilwoman Nirva LaFortune, serving in her role as the parent of a current Providence Public Schools student.
