MEDIA ADVISORY: Quahog commission to hear testimony from URI, EPA
|
STATE HOUSE — The special legislative commission to study the reduced catch of quahogs in Narragansett Bay will meet Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 2 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House.
The panel will hear testimony from Dr. Chris Kincaid of the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, and Jason Grear of the Environmental Protection Agency, followed by public testimony.
The commission is tasked with making a comprehensive study and providing recommendations on the issues relating to the reduced catch of quahogs in Narragansett Bay. In making those determinations, the commission will delve into nitrogen depletion, hypoxic conditions — oxygen deficiency, changing aquatic life, climate change and other issues that may have an impact on quahogs. The panel will report back to the General Assembly by May 31, 2024.
The commission is co-chaired by Rep. Joseph J. Solomon Jr. (D-Dist. 22, Warwick) and Sen. Alana DiMario (D-Dist. 36, North Kingstown, Narragansett, New Shoreham).
