12/4/2023 MEDIA ADVISORY: Quahog commission to meet at Narragansett Bay Commission office to hear environmental concerns
STATE HOUSE — The special legislative commission to study the reduced catch of quahogs in Narragansett Bay will meet Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m. at the Narragansett Bay Commission Corporate Office Building at One Service Road in Providence.

The panel will hear testimony on environmental science from Jim Kelly of the Narragansett Bay Commission. Dr. Autumn Oczkowski, a research ecologist with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Atlantic Coastal Environmental Sciences Division in Narragansett will also speak.

The commission is tasked with making a comprehensive study and providing recommendations on the issues relating to the reduced catch of quahogs in Narragansett Bay. In making those determinations, the commission will delve into nitrogen depletion, hypoxic conditions — oxygen deficiency, changing aquatic life, climate change and other issues that may have an impact on quahogs. The panel will report back to the General Assembly by May 31, 2024.

The commission is co-chaired by Rep. Joseph J. Solomon Jr. (D-Dist. 22, Warwick) and Sen. Alana DiMario (D-Dist. 36, North Kingstown, Narragansett, New Shoreham).

The meeting will be recorded and available at https://www.rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.
