10/30/2023 Morales named Legislator of the Year by Childhood Lead Action Project
STATE HOUSE – Rep. David Morales has been honored by Childhood Lead Action Project with their Legislator of the Year award for his work to protect children from lead poisoning.

Representative Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence) is the sponsor of a legislation (2023-H 6238A) enacted this year giving tenants a measure of power in getting lead hazards fixed in their apartments. It allows tenants to pay their rent into an escrow account when there are unaddressed lead hazards in their homes. The new law ensures that tenants remain current on their rent obligations, and that landlords won’t be able to access the funds until they address the lead hazards.

He also introduced legislation (2023-H 5318) to invest federal infrastructure funds to replace public and private lead drinking water service lines across the state, at no cost to property owners or tenants. Additionally, he sponsored a resolution (2023-H 6433) establishing May 23, 2023, as Lead Poisoning Prevention Day in Rhode Island.

“Congratulations to Rep. Morales for earning the Childhood Lead Action Project’s 2023 ‘Legislator of the Year’ award,” said Laura Brion, executive director of the Childhood Lead Action Project. “Not only did Rep. Morales sponsor multiple lead poisoning prevention bills this session, he’s turned lead poisoning prevention into a year-round responsibility. This summer and fall, he organized lead safety door-to-door outreach and hosted a community workshop with us to educate his constituents about the new lead laws that passed and resources for lead poisoning prevention.”

The award was presented at CLAP’s 30th anniversary celebration, held Oct. 26 at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick.
