9/25/2023 MEDIA ADVISORY: Plastic Bottle Waste Commission meets on Wednesday
STATE HOUSE – The newly formed Special Joint Legislative Commission to Study and Provide Recommendations to Protect Our Environment and Natural Resources from Plastic Bottle Waste has scheduled its inaugural meeting for Wednesday, September 27 at 3 p.m. in the House Lounge of the State House.
           
The commission is tasked with creating a comprehensive study on the issues concerning current practices for the recycling of plastic bottles, miniature alcoholic beverage containers, and single-use plastic packaging and identifying pathways to improve the state's ability to address and recycle these materials.  The commission will report its findings and recommendations to the General Assembly no later than June 10, 2024.
           
Speaker of the House K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick) has appointed Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett), House Minority Leader Michael W. Chippendale (R-Dist. 40, Foster, Glocester, Coventry) and Rep. Tina L. Spears (D-Dist. 36, Charlestown, New Shoreham, South Kingstown, Westerly).
           
Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence) has appointed Sen. Mark P. McKenney (D-Dist. 30, Warwick), Sen. Bridget G. Valverde (D-Dist. 35, North Kingstown, East Greenwich, South Kingstown) and Sen. Thomas J. Paolino (R-Dist. 17, Lincoln, North Providence, North Smithfield).
           
The commission will also consist of Terrence Gray, Director of the Department of Environmental Management; Jared Rhodes, Director of the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation; Topher Hamblett, Executive Director of Save the Bay; Jed Thorp, Executive Director of Clean Water Action; Tom Papa, Rhode Island Beverage Association; Robert Swartz, Rhode Island Alcohol Beverage Distributors; Scott Bromberg, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Food Dealers; Jackie Mancini, National Beer Wholesalers; Nicholas A. Fede, Jr., Rhode Island Liquor Collaborative; Amy Moses, Executive Director of the RI Audubon Society; Kevin Budris, Environmental Attorney; and Larry Coburn, a local convenience store owner.
           
The meeting will be televised live by Capitol Television, which can be seen by Cox Communications subscribers on channels 15 and 61 for high definition, on channel 15 by i3Broadband viewers, and channel 34 for Verizon subscribers.
